The Popsicle was invented, on accident, by an 11 year old boy in 1905. Frank Epperson had left a mixture of powdered soda, water, and a stick in a cup on his porch during a cold night. He woke up the next morning and it created a frozen treat-on-a-stick. He originally called it the “Epsicle”; however, children kept asking for “Pop’s sicle” so Frank changed the name to the commonly-used “Popsicle”.
He obtained a patent in 1923 and licensed the rights to a bigger company. Today, the brand is owned by Unilever and the public consumes over 2 billion popsicles every year.
