Inventing is nothing new to Jon Smallegan, a lifelong engineer and inventor with an impressive 28 patents to his name. What is new to this product professional is the type of product he invented this time around – a food prep device that makes baking pies as easy as… well, as easy as pie!
Jon’s quest for a piece of pie as good as his mom used to make, led him to develop a pie pan that simplifies the process for anyone, regardless of kitchen experience. “My mother made apple pie better than anyone,” recalls Jon, fondly. “EZ Pockets™ was the result of my sisters, my wife and me, not being able to replicate her pie.” His family, like many other everyday cooks, found it difficult to master the art of pie making, finding it too time consuming and messy. “I wanted a way to make a great pie with no experience needed; no mess and no fuss,” explains Jon.

So, Jon’s engineering mind went to work, as it once did in the automotive and security industries. He would start with a ready-made crust, eliminating the need for mixing or rolling out dough. Self-contained pieces would be cut before baking, so that there was no hassle or mess when serving. He began designing a pan to meet these requirements and the EZASPie Baking System (aka EZ Pockets™) was born!
In February of 2012, Jon was searching for ways to market EZ Pockets™, when he came upon a unique opportunity from InventionHome. “Submit your product for a chance to have it featured in InventionHome’s booth at the International Home + Housewares Show”. Jon decided to give it a shot, and it payed off. We invited him to demonstrate his product at the show.
“I spent the next four days demonstrating my invention while baking treats for everyone who came by,” recalls Jon. “The best part was being there with the InventionHome team. I couldn’t believe how many companies and contacts they knew that either stopped at their booth or that they brought back to discuss not only my invention but the other inventions they were exhibiting on behalf of their inventor clients. Within two weeks of the show I had a contract to have EZ Pockets manufactured and marketed.”
Fast forward to present day. After extensive product development and media testing, EZ Pockets™ is now rolling out via national television. The retail launch is slated for the middle of September with various retail chains.
“We are proud to have worked closely with InventionHome”, says Rick Kelly from the licensee company. “InventionHome’s professional and quick work made all the stages of the process uncomplicated and hassle free. We anticipate a great success with the EZ Pockets™ invention for many years to come.”
